stolen by the post office?

Okay, I understand your frustration with this issue. I am a letter carrier and would never, I repeat never, take the risk of loosing my job by stealing anything. I have heard of people doing stupid stuff and stealling things but the majority of our employees are honest and care more that the item be delivered in a timely manor. There are contractors who do carry the mail and it has been questioned whether their integrity is as high as the postal employees. Just so you know, if I ever have an animal of any type to deliver I first call the receiver to be sure they are home. I'm not required to but I know someone is waiting for their new babies. I hope you do not feel that all usps employees are careless of their responsibilities. Remember when you are shipping anything to make sure your package is very well secured. Other than live animals all mail is machine sorted and can be damaged and contents lost. But be extremely careful on how you package your items insures that it will arrive safely. Live animals are always hand sorted and I beleive handled special because they are live. I once had to deliver roosters to a place I was sure was fighting the birds. I did my job and delivered the birds with a heavey heart. Shortly after the location was raided and it was a fighting ring. I felt horrible but I was committed to delivering the mail no matter what my personal feelings were. I hope this helps some how to know that your precious animals are taken care of by most of the usps.

I am not saying that all USPS employees or subcontractors are thieves. It is actually a very small number. It does happen. I know the guy my husband was working for was charging USPS 4 times what he was paying my husband. And don't say it was for maintaining the truck and trailer the guy never made repairs beyond just enough to keep them on the road (not always legally) and often we had to pay for the fuel out of our own pockets and wait months for the guy to reimburse us. The best bunch of guys were out of the DC BMC. They knew us and actually went out of their way to make sure they got us unloaded and loaded ASAP.
Oh and if you want to figure out the if it is a mail contractor or not that you are passing on the highway. Usually on the back door of the trailer towards the top it has US Mail Contractor on it.
My head is so full of little tidbits of trivial knowledge about the trucking industry.

A carrier in our area years ago was arrested for stealing mail, she was going after cards mostly (for $$) another was stashing mail of residents she hated, a bunch was found after she was gone. I've had a lot of fantastic carriers too but there have been some losers, it happens.

But chicks aren't cards, doesn't seem like someone would take that many. I would think its more possible that since it wasn't secured that it was jostled in transit and some got loose.

When we got our chick order last year, the box had been opened. Our Postmistress opened it while she was calling us to tell us to come get them. When my husband got there the employees were all in the office playing with our chicks! They had a metal trash can with a small ceramic heater in it with the box of chicks on top keeping toasty warm. None were missing, and we thought it was hilarious!

(VERY nice people at our Post Office)

My postman is also my buddy, so my mail is safe....... until the weekend relief driver puts our mail in an abandoned box about an eighth of a mile down the road. It's understandable though, we've only lived here 13 YEARS!!!

It is illegal to open the mail even by employees. the only time it would be opened is if there was a question about the contents and that would have to be done by the postmaster only. In the case of the chicks it may have been a matter of making sure the little guys were in good health or needed food or water. This I would accept myself. The postal inspection service is who to contact if you suspect any kind of mail theft. Be assured that anytime an employee is reported as suspect they are questioned. And many times there is a simple mistake. We are not perfect and there are "bad eggs" in every job. I just hope that any future shipping will be much safer and arrive to your satisfaction.

It is not the first time I have heard of bird gone missing.

About 6 years ago a friend got an empty box upon delivery, her adult bird went missing in shipping. lol
The box had the correct charge for weight of when the bird was shipped, but 0 lbs on delivery.

So the seller did what they said they did. Someone just could not resist the silkie fluff.

When i picked up my order last Friday from the PO, the end of the box was bent up because they were checking out the chicks. He even told me that one was dying. It didn't bother me. It sounded like it was the first time they've handled chicks. They called me first thing when they received them.
