When gathering eggs, do you
1.) leave at room temperature
2.) wash and leave at room temperature
3.) put in fridge
4.) wash and put in fridge

Which method allows the eggs to last the longest
 
1. (if for eating). For incubating, they go in the basement where it's cooler.

#3 allows the eggs to last longest. Don't wash. Just put in the fridge.

That's what I do unless they are just completely filthy. Usually I get at least one egg that is just nasty looking so I rinse it off.
 
I used to just keep them out on the counter (out of the direct sun), but then I heard that this can actually cause a drop in quality, so now I put them straight in the fridge. If an egg is a bit gross, I will wipe with a damp towel first.

I did read early on about the tip that is in the poster above: you don't want to wash an egg and then leave it at room temperature.
