My brother bough chicks Noah’s Ark style, two of each breed, that the farm stores had. The blue laced Wyandottes were straight run, which he didn’t know at the time of purchase.

I’m raising them through the brooder stage until he gets a coop then all but two go to his coop, and I keep the two. We’ve had them just over a week.

He can’t have a rooster in town, so if one turns out to be a rooster, that’s mine. I was wondering if I kept both Wyandottes, could they breed and produce chicks? I’m thinking I could get more chickens that way instead of buying. I’m wondering about the broodiness of hens and whether she’d raise them once hatched, or would I have to take them to the brooder? The is the first time either my brother or I have had chicks/chickens, so we have zero experience.

Should I post this question in a different forum?

Chicken breeds are a manmade thing. Chickens do not care about breed. Any rooster will try to mate any hen, regardless of breed. If the eggs are fertilized they can hatch.

You never know if a hen will go broody or not. If she goes broody she will hatch and raise the chicks. If she does not go broody she will do neither.

If a hen goes broody she stops laying eggs so you would have to have eggs on hand for her to hatch or find her fertile eggs from elsewhere.

Since the Wyandotte were straight run you may have two girls, two boys, or one of each. There is a chance that one of the others is a boy. If they used vent sexing it is only about 90% accurate. Regardless of what breed your rooster is, if you get one, he can breed any hen. Here's hoping you do not get more than one rooster.
