Hi everyone. I have a 1.5 yo chicken who was chasing a squirrel in the coop. I didn’t see it happen but she started limping and holding the leg up right after I got the squirrel out. I assume she hurt herself. It’s been 1 week and she’s still holding the leg up. No wound, no discoloration and still eating/drinking. Eggs not every day. I don’t have a vet around here so idk what to do. I hear about splinting but don’t know what part hurts??? How can you diagnose without xray?

Sprain: will occasionally put weight on it

Break: never puts weight on it

Gently restrain the bird and move the joint/leg normally, a sprain should move normally (the bird may fight you) and a break/dislocation may move weird/not move easily/bend in the wrong place, may also be normal if it is a minor break.

Don’t place a splint unless it is obvious where the break is. If the bone is exposed get her on antibiotics asap. A splint needs to secure the bone and the joint below and the joint above (poor prognosis on higher breaks, at least with splinting).

Whatever it is, limiting movement and rest is the cure of choice. Put the bird in a comfortable small pen with access to water and feed (and a friend if needed) where she can’t move around much. A sprain could take a few weeks to heal and a break 4-6 weeks. Keep the pen clean and quiet and stress free.

Thank you so much! I appreciate this info. I was able to move all parts of the leg carefully and normally and she didn’t fight me. She was able to put the leg down on her own but without weight after I gave her a warm soak with epsom. Still won’t use it but maybe that’s a good sign. First time I’ve seen her let it down. 🤞🤞

hey 👋

holding leg up is a sign of pain and trauma and broken leg won’t able to work at all so i guess its a injury or trauma for pain i use Drumsticks leaf extract as they are anti- inflammatory and antioxidant it’s widely available everywhere now moringa extract from leaf not root it heals bone pain faster

I’ve never heard of drumstick leaf extract. Do you give orally? Or do you rub on the leg?
Thank you for this reply.
