Strange Beak?

I have a "Big Black Hen" (don't know what breed) whos top part of her beak is longer than the bottom. It does not appear to be crossed, it is just longer and curves down over the lower part. When I got her as an adult from our local feed store, it did not appear to be a problem. Lately, however, she seems to have difficulty eating. I am thinking that she is not getting enough to eat, since she grumbles at me a lot and she stopped laying about a week ago. Can I clip or file that part of the beak? Will it hurt her at this age? She is about a year. Or am I destined to feed her by herself (The other two hens take ALL the treats from her, although she seems to be able to eat the mash that I mix for them)

Thanks

AZ, trimming the top is normal for some of the flock. We have one that needs trimming quite often. Dog nail trimmers and then a nail file ( emery board ) to smooth the edges works great. Once your chicken gets this spa treatment, they love to get the beak trimmed, at least mine do. Good Luck.

Just trim the clear part, like a fingernail being careful not to trim too much.
