Hello!
My shipment of chicks from Murray McMurray arrived on Thursday. Other than some pasty butt action all chick went to bed chipper and active. I woke up to having lost one of my Mottled Houdans. My BF and I closely observed the flock all day yesterday with no issues, everyone eating fine learning to peck and scratch eating and drinking. Around 9pm I checked on them before bed, I woke up the other little Houdan to check her butt but she wouldn’t open her eyes. No droopy neck or heavy breathing- just quiet peeps. I was worried so I gave her a sugar solution. She pepped up opened her eyes and did some snacking and some pecking and scratching but then retreated back to under the heating plate. I was just I was going to wake up to her gone as well- but she survived the night! She had a little pasty butt so I cleaned it up- she pooped right on my hand (so she’s pooping) but she has her eyes closed again. After I cleaned her up, I gave her some water and put her back in with the others. She walked around, did some preening- didn’t eat but had some water and then she went back over to the heating plate. Still never opening her eyes- but I did watch her sibs peck at her. I just woke her up again, put her by the food she opened one eye and is now eating and drinking...
She was the breed I was most excited for- and suggestions or ideas at to what could be happening?
Can chicks just be sleepy?!
