I moved my chicks outside almost a week ago. They love picking in the grass and never seemed scared at all. Last night I left my fiance outside with them while I got clean water and wood shavings. When I came back they were all doing that screamy/crying stress peep (the one that drives people bonkers). I asked him what the heck happened and he said he had no idea. He said a jet flew over and "the red one" (my red polish) make a peep he had never hear before then they all started and wouldn't stop. I sat down with them and two of my chicks that look at me as the "food human" and nothing more scrambled into my arms. THEY NEVER do this. Then the other 8 fought for space in my lap. Generally when I let them out they are so excited to eat the bugs and weeds they don't look at me twice. I'm assuming they thought it was a hawk, they sounded a warning, then ran to me for protection? None of my chicks have ever been especially "clingy".
Here is a picture, the quality sucks because it was dusk. Can you see the sebright under the two silkies? The D'uccle is always on me and my chicks are all sweet but never like this. The silkies kept trying to snuggle into my shirt.
I had to laugh at my partridge silkie, she hates to be pet and I was petting everyone to help calm them. She kept giving me the "don't touch me!" peep even though she was fighting for a place in my lap. chickens...
