Hello! I just noticed a very strange looking egg laid on the ground in my coop sometime this morning. I've attached a picture of it whole and opened. I've never seen anything like it, it almost resembles an eyeball. Has anyone else seen something similar that may lead me towards an answer as to why this was laid and if an illness or deficiency is involved?

I supply oyster shell, my ladies free range, I have a limestone driveway as well so I would think a lack of calcium wouldn't be the case. All my girls that are laying, are relatively healthy and lay mostly in the nesting box or under our steps by the house. I do have a 6 year old hen that hasn't laid in at least a year, and she has been acting off for about a week, her poops are almost less processed, a little runny, and she will excessively pulse her vent.

Other than that she is acting normal, I've given everyone a dose of electrolytes vitamins and yogurt and treated her specifically for mites and the coop just in case. My question is, do you think this could have been laid by my retired hen and should I be concerned?

How was she today? That could be lash material from her, but I dont know. It could be from your non laying hen.
She seems normal so far today, my other girls seem normal as well. I haven't seen any super alarming poops today, although I was gone alot today. An aspect I failed to mention in the 1st post is that I got a 2 yr old very sweet rooster about 6 months ago. He has been mounting the old hen alot and I'm wondering if it sparked some slight hormonal changes in her to allow her to lay that egg. Just a thought. If anything else happens I will definitely post! Thanks for the support.
