Hi all. I have a flock of 9 girls - 2 barred rocks, 3 RIRs, 2 brown leghorns, one australorp and one bantam brown leghorn. They are all about 2 years old. They started laying really well again now that the days have gotten longer but every few days we find one of these very strange eggs. They are elongated and pale compared to the other eggs (brown layers), misshapen - not uniform, show creases in the shell, and the shells are very thin and break easily. Also the texture of the eggshell is very rough, almost like sandpaper, and the color on one end is always darker than the other. That end also tends to be very pointy. In the past the only difference in the eggs were sizes really. We had one of our RIRs go through a period of illness this winter which did require some antibiotic treatment with Tylan, but she has recovered and is currently going through a hard molt and I don't think she is laying but I can't say for sure. There have been days lately when we have gotten 8 eggs. It's also been since the 3rd week of January since she has received any medications.
They are fed a diet of crumbles with frequent supplemental greens (lettuce, spinach, etc) and free range as often as we can let them out (only when we are home due to predators). We supplement with scratch in cold weather or as an occasional treat, and give oyster shell occasionally. All of the other eggs we get have very very hard shells.
Any thoughts?
Thanks to anyone who has ideas!
