I have an OE bantam rooster who has decided to " separate " himself completely from the rest of my flock. I know I have way TOO many roosters - 5 - with about 19 hens...But since early January he roosts outside and never goes even close to the others. I have an enclosed pen and attached coop. I usually let them all out around lunch time each day and they go back in the coop around dusk. ( We live out in the country and have lots of room ! ) Mind you, here in south Georgia we had 3 weeks of hard freezes at night and have had some very cold weather ( and rainy ) since then. I worry about him - he is about 4 yrs. old - but what can I do ??? Before this happened I didn't notice him getting pecked or chased. I cannot figure out what is going on. Any ideas ??? I am feeding him separately, by the way.

Not strange at all, I would think he is 'low man on the pole' and he has been banished from the flock. You are right, 5 is way too many roos. If you really love him, build him a separate coop/run and buy him some girls of his own. If you want to keep all the roos, build a bachelor pad , away from the flock and move all the roos except the best one (You will have to decide what qualities you want in your roo). This will give your girls a break.

Maybe he's just a loner
