I have a 3 year old hen, my first ever chick, Doris, who goes broody every July. I had ordered eggs for July, thinking I'd start them in the incubator if she didn't go broody by the time they arrived. She went broody the day before they came, it was over 90 degrees, and I saw her 2 chicks from last year, now hens, getting in the nesting basket with her. I took them out, since it was way too hot, then 1/2 hour later I came back and Doris was sitting on the two hens she hatched last year looking so proud of herself!??! What was she thinking? Why were they allowing that? I had to take them out and cool them off in the dunking pool because they were panting so hard.

She has a really strong broody instinct, but really? It was like, "look at me! I hatched two full grown hens all by myself!! I'm awesome!!" Is this weird, or just something I haven't come across yet.

Lol sounds funny, I have 2 broodies one is 2 yrs one is 5 months and they are sharing the same box I think sometimes the broodies feel extra nice..
some of them allow hens to come lay in their box so that they can add more eggs to their clutch lol
