straw/hay/shavings

i know there has to be shavings or straw of some sort in the coop and nest now what about the outside run area ?

You can put some down but typically it will just blow away. It can also make mud worse by adding organic matter to the mix soaking up the water instead of letting it drain on it's own. The only thing I've done is dig a hole and fill it with sand for a dust bath.

Lots of information on deep litter for the run.

My run has 8 - 24 inches of deep litter at all times.

Works extremely well for me.
