Straw or shavings?

Just curious what is the best. I would assume shavings are, but i don't know about you I am cleaning half the nesting boxes out everyday.
Half the chickens sleep in the nesting boxes instead of the perches. Because of this I go through a lot of straw. I have been using straw because its cheap.
Any ideas?

I use pine shavings. They work great and aren't too expensive.

Your roosts may be too close to the ground if they are roosting in the nests? When they are young, they will sometimes roost there if the big girls won't let them on the roost. But once they are big enough to lay, they should be roosting. However, your roosts need to be above the level of the nest boxes.
