straw TOTALLY thrown out of nests?

have 6 hens and 5 almost 5 mo pullets housed together and went out to shut their door tonight and noticed they had NO straw in their nests(also where they like to sleep) so then I have to get more straw and work around their "trance" so they don't poop all over the naked nest.

noticed golden campine circling in nest yesterday so maybe practicing pullets?

Mine do that too! I just had to put new straw into all their nest boxes. I think it's only one hen that does it. I guess she figures that if she throws it out, she will get new stuff! silly chickens!

Oh I give up, I'm just gonna get some of that cabinet liner stuff and line my birds nest boxes! I have had the same issue for way to long...lol!

have NEVER had this problem in 7 years of chickenlove. and its not a HUGE issue but when you're used to a routine and settling everyone in for night-grrrrr! fortunately there should be eggs again soon(another issue)

I was having this problem with my 5 1/2 month old pullets. They were only kicking out all of the straw on the upper nest boxes(I watched them one day and they were picking out grains that were left on the straw and digging deeper to find more.). So I switched to shavings. It has worked for the most part!!!

My chicekns will peck and scratch at fresh straw if it's placed in thier nest boxes. I just grab old straw from the henhouse floor and toss it in the nest boxes. They aren't as interested in scratching the old stuff.

For this reason I cut up old carpeted car floor mats and put into the boxes.
Just a little something for a soft landing.

Got tired of refilling the nests, so I raised the side to 6 1/2 inches (on the inside of box). They still have room to get in, as the top is not completely covered. Problem solved!

It's funny but my birds pretty much prefer just laying their eggs in the corner on the floor of the coop under where I have an old door leaning. So much for my hard work making an egg box. LOL I figure whatever makes them happy and gets me eggs.
