So, I have been really sick since Friday night and only have my oldest daughter
at home to help me unti my wife and other 2 kids return home.
I did not sleep much last night so was later than usual going out to help
daughter feed up and gather eggs today.
I have 5 different chicken coops, one of which contains my bantys. While I was
tending to one pen DD was tending to the bantys and called out to me wanting
to know if I had gotten rid of 1 of the roos. We have a black cochin and a
lavender colored cochin in that pen and the black was not out in the run.
Thinking someone for some unknown reason may have stolen him
I started to the coop and here was a full size rooster walking around the pen area.
Evidently someone decided to dump him on me as we live over 1/4 of a mile from the highway
and the nearest neighbor with chickens lives about 1 mile away. I looked into the
coop and my balck cochin had been whipped up pretty bad through the fence. Both of
my roos were scarred but the black was pretty bad.
Needless to say I was irate about it and had DD go get a gun and I dispatched it right then.
Don't know when last night or early Sunday morning he was put out. (The neighbor had no
rooster that looked like the dumped rooster)
Rooster had scaly legs, mites, was missing lots of feathers and just in general did not look good.
We have had numerous pregnant dogs and cats dumped out here but never
a rooster.(Heck I have been giving roosters away so why would I want someone
to donate me one like that?)
Now having to doctor both of my cochin roosters but havin doubts about the black one making it.

Oh harry I am so sorry. Watch your coops and run for any signs of parasites..if he looked that rough and had the scaley leg mites, he could have other parasites as well. I hate the thuoght of someone dumping a problem on you like that and your birds being hurt as a result. Glad yo dispatched him.

I hope your little cochin makes it.

Post in the emergencies section about the injuries, there are some great helpful folks there.

Thanks.
I am thinking that he may have some internal injuries in his
facial area. Actually his whole head I guess. Was all swollen
but that could have been caused by the external injuries. Also his
eyes were of concern.
Hopefully I will be able to get out today and be able to tell more about him.

Oh that's so sad! I can tell you I've had roos that took a serious whooping and fully recovered. One banty in particular- I thought was dead. He was in a mound in the corner of his coop, face all black with blood. I brought him in, gave him a bath and a bathtub to himself. Within a week- good as new! Hope your little guy has a full recovery!

Went out and helped DD feed up this morning and the cochin is
getting around better than yesterday. Swelling has gone down
considerably except for around his eyes which aren't as bad as they
were. Will take a little time but there is not much beauty about him
right now.
Got him in a big cage by himself right now so he has no problem eating
and drinking.
Thanks everyone and have a nice day,
Harry
