Hey everyone my wife and I decided to see if getting and raising chickens was for us! we also have 3 boys that we want to teach some responsibility to so chickens and a garden it is. We started small on the coop (one from cconly.com, that way if it was for us , we could later make a better coop/run) anyways we got 4 pullets yesterday (2 golden buffs, 2 rhode island reds) and brought them home and put them in the run area of the coop...they seemed content there and then my old lab came over and stuck her nose by the fence and they went straight for cover and into the coop...they went right to the nesting boxes and this was around dusk anyways so I just shut the coop up for the night and let them hang out in there...this morning I opened up the door to their run and they have still stayed in the nest all day, no signs of them coming out...I did see them drinking water but I have not seen them eat yet...which I am sure they will....but how long till chickens get comfortable enough to move around in their coop and run? I know its a lot of stress especially coming from a place where there are 100's of chickens to being only 4...they are 5 weeks old and I am just trying to get a feel for what I should do to make sure they are comfortable...thanks! Here are pics of the coop and run as well, I added little solar night lights outside of it since this was taken!

I'd be freaked to if a big dog came sniffing at me after only being use to chickens lol. I would just give them some water and food inside the coop and leave the door open so they can go outside to the run if they want. You can also try giving them some meal worms, mine LOVE them and it will entice them to come out.

Also Welcome to BYC and congrats on the chicks.
