Hello Quailaliens I have a young female coturnix quail that has developed a pink bubble like bump on top of her beak. I am concerned as to what this is, what may have caused it and how to treat it. If anyone has had any experience with this issue among quails or treatment, I would be very grateful...Thank You!

I am by no means an expert, but, I have been raising both Bobwhite and Coturnix (separately) for a couple of years now. I had this happened to one of my Coturnix when I was keeping them in a smaller welded wire mesh breeding cage (2'W X 4'L X 18"H). I noticed that it was very actively pacing and pecking at the wire constantly, so I assumed that this caused the bump on the beak. Since I built an open aviary for the Coturnix (8'W X 16'L X 7'H), I haven't noticed any "bumps" on beaks. Hope this helps.

Yup, probably an injury. I have had it develop after birds flush into a mesh roof, and after males have been separated temporarily and spend a bunch of time pacing and banging against the side. It's usually just inflamed and will go down again in a week or two. You've just gotta figure out what caused it and adjust. :) And if anything about it changes or other symptoms develop update us!

Thanks to all who replied. It was my thoughts as well that it was a bump injury from being startled. I've had her only 3 weeks now and so she and her 2 sisters are fairly new to their surroundings. Will keep you posted and meanwhile I'll look into possible building a large chicken coop for them instead of a 2 level Hutch. They love those ramps though going up and down them constantly like kids on stairs. :wee Thanks Again!
