Hi Guys,

I've got a chick which appears to be struggling. Firstly, it has been pipped for 36 hours so well over the 24 hour wait and see period which worries me. However I have read that generally you can leave them up to 40 hours?
Secondly, this chick has pipped at the small end of the egg. Is it likely they are in the wrong position? The chicks beak is poking out of the hole.

When is the right time to intervene? I have two chicks in the incubator that hatched yesterday which I am eager to transfer to brooder but don't want to jeopardise my two pipped eggs!

Thanks!

If your humidity is high enough you should be able to move your other chicks out. However, leaving them in there is just fine. Their chirping may actually encourage the unhatched chick to keep going.

Do you have any pics of this little chick and where he pipped? If he has truly been pipped with no progress for 36 hours then I would probably start thinking about assisting. I have had a few chicks able to hatch themselves out being malpositioned but have also had some die that I did not assist and some that I think would have died if I did not assist. Before you do anything though make sure you watch a video - there are several good ones on youtube. If you have any bleeding - STOP!!! Make small chips - tweezers work good, and just make small little chips at at a time by pinching. Avoid the inner membranes to make sure that the blood vessels are dried up first. Go slow, do a little at a time, put the little chick back and then do a little more. Assisting should not be a fast process and can take a couple of hours.

Good luck. I hope all turns out well.

Thanks for replies,

I assisted by making the zip carefully for chick but unfortunately it never pushed out so we lost it sometime in the night. Shame but I suspect the chick was probably weak anyway if it never tried pushing out with the help!
