Stupid flies

If you want some predators email me and I will find a supplier for you. They really are great.

I use "Blue Streak" in my barn with the horses. It is a fly bait that is sold in most tack shops and feed stores. I stinks like nothing that I have ever smelled before when you open the can, but you just sprinkle a little out in a can (like a empty cat food can) and put it somewhere out of the way where nothing can get to it except the flies. After about 3-4- days, your fly problem will be greatly reduced.
It costs about $5. for about a 4oz can of granules. You use about a teaspoon full per can. It lasts for ever!

I've used Blue Streak and it is very good- just be sure no animals can reach the crystals except for insects.

No-pest strips will control your coop space for 3 months (dichlorovos). Wax rectangles in hanging strips. Avoid over food/water and keep well above chickens or cage in hardware cloth.

In bedding use Stable Boy powder and food-grade DE.

I have a horse and these things keep flies down to nearly zilch!

I have tried those bag you add water and hang out...however they STINK like rotting meat. It was so gross we could smell it wafing up to our second story deck. I filled that thing up with about 5 inches of dead flies in about 3 days!!! Bad part about it smelling is it attracts flies from all over advertising its there!

we live close to other neighbors and despite the fact we pooper-scoop after our dogs and chickens daily the flies are relentless and all you can hear is them buzzing when you walk outside and disturb them. Also the neighbors can look outside their second floor window and see the flies crawling all over the ground where a poo 'has been' (after we pooper scooped). It just makes it seem like our yard s 'dirty' even though it isnt and we alreadi had to fight the town to keep our birds- dont want neighbors to think they are dirty when they are definately cleaner than any of the neighbor's dogs!!!

Aren't they toxic?

Yes they are very toxic. I keep mine well away from any animals. I made boxes purly for the mothballs. So far the mothballs have keep away snakes and many bugs for me anyways.

We have been using the pop bottle traps, and they stank so bad that my son tossed them. They were only half full too.

I guess tomorrow we will have to get some more. Hang the fly strips above the pop bottle traps. The bottle attracts them. The more you get on the strip, the longer your bottle lasts.

The strips are cheap; the bottle traps are $7.50 each.

We used to use something called "Golden Maldren" that killed them by the thousands. The last time I tried it, nothing died. Looks like the EPA got to the manufacturer.

Oh how I miss DDT.

Update on this: I used the milk jug idea someone posted in another thread and was quite impressed - I had several dozen dead flies when I came home that day.

And then I brought home the Rescue Fly trap, that you add water too. It does stink like a dumpster, but I don't smell it once I'm 10 feet away or so, so nothing that will bother my neighbors. And wow! I've had it up for a day and a half and I've got to have at least 500 flies in there, and at no point do I walk past it and not see 5 more flies trying to get in. I've been moving it all around the yard and it just draws the flies to where ever I put it. I can't get another one until the weekend so I hope it can contain all the flies I catch the rest of the week.

It's a lot better out in the yard, the remaining flies mostly hang out around the trap, and I only have a few buzzing around the chickens at any point.

I think my plan of attack is going to be to get a couple more of these next weekend and also order the fly predators. Then hopefully I'll be getting the existing adults with the trap and getting their babies with the predators.

I am hopeful!

In my area flies are a huge issue as it is. So to keep them down I use DE and also I added a few muscovys to eat the flies. I love to watch them eat the flies. I think they say they eat their weight in flies

I still have flies but not as bad I think as I would otherwise.
