I cannot believe this. I shipped out two birds on Tuesday to a guy in GA and they arrived this morning as scheduled but when he got there the lady told him there was no sound coming from the box and sure enough he said they were dead. How could adult birds be dead after a two day trip? and they HAD food and watermelon in the box with them! One was a 3 month old blue cockerel and the other was a splash year old female, very fiesty. The post office had to have buried them in the truck or something to have killed them, smothered them or something right? I sent him an e-mail saying I have never had tis happen and waiting to see if he is going to request the cost of the birds back. Never been in this spot before but sure I will if he needs me to. I am so mad, and , I need to ship out some others and now I am paranoid! Maybe I should pay the extra for the special handling on the boxes as well? I have been shipping birds for years and this has never happened!

Its getting awfully hot this time of year already, if they sat in a closed truck even for a little while it could have done it.

It was probably a mistake by the Post office that killed them. It was probably a one time thing. Dont worry!!

(That does stink though!!)

That's terribly sad. Doesn't the post office compensate???
I'd pay the extra for special handling just to be safe.

I'm so sorry that happened.

those poor chickens. I'm guessing the po doesn't offer insurance for shipped animals?

I called the postmaster here where I shipped them from and let him know. He said he did not think there was anything they could do but he would look into it and get back to me. My other chicken friend works there so she is the one that told me to call him and let him know. The guy did attach pics I saw, interesting to note that they ate all their food in the box in the bowl I provided, all watermelon was gone, so they must have made it to yesterday. It was cool here when shipped but I guess along the way it could have gotten hot depending if they had them in a crammed truck.
I plan on sending him two replacement pullets in the fall to compensate, and he does have 2 dozen eggs that should arrive tomorrow. I just feel terrible.

Same thing happened to me back in March!! I was on the receiving end. I paid $260 for top SQ Silkies (2 hens) and they sat somewhere Sat. then Sun. the p.o. called the seller and said they smelled, so they assumed (didn't look to verify) that they were dead! So they put a plastic bag on the box, killing them both! The seller took the bodies to his vet (for $130) to find out one of them died of "blunt force trauma" to the head. The p.o. only refunded him $100! VERY BAD POSTAL EXPERIENCE!!!!

When I recieved my shipped birds this spring, the breeder put insurance on the shipment. I'm assuming that the insurance would have covered costs if my birds arrived dead?

Sorry about this ordeal that your going through.
