stupid question, really really stupid

stupid question I know this is a good one.

you can tell the sex of a chicken at one or two days old, can you also tell the sex of turkeys or any other bird DUCKS, QUIAL, GEESE, PEAFOWL, GUINEA FOWL ect..... or is it only some you can tell what they are at so young of age and the rest has to be a little older.

I had a chicken one time that the guy said he was pretty sure it was female but it wasn't, I had the rooster for alittle more then a year and he went to the oven he got to hard to handle and was flogging me long story so now I wonder to if all are did the same way as to tell if male or female, by the wing feathers.

It is possible to sex some chicken chicks at hatch. A rooster gives a copy of all his genes to all his offspring, but the hen is more selfish. There are a few genes she only gives to her sons and not her daughters. If these are genes that are dominant and express themselves so you can see them, then you can tell the sons from the daughters at hatch. The genes commonly used are the barred gene, the silver versus gold gene, and a fast feathering gene. The first post in this link goes into great detail about it.

This only works for the first generation and the parents have to have just the right combination for it to work. There are some pretty strong misconceptions on sexing chicks by the wing feathers at hatch. It does not work every generation. It works one generation when the hen has the slow feathering gene (which is dominant) and the rooster is pure for the fast feathering gene. In the offspring from that union, the daughters will have the fast feathering gene from their father and the sons will have one of each, so it cannot work the second generation.

Only few breeds of chicken can be sexed by the wing feathers. Geese can not be sexed by the feathers at all, not ever. Ducks can be sexed by the tail feathers part of the year and only after they are over 4 months old. Not all year long, though.

I don't know about feather sexing turkeys. Haven't heard about it, so suspect that you can't.

Vent sexing is how they are sexed when they are day olds, and then they have to be marked in some way to remember who is who.

If someone is "pretty sure" about the gender, he is simply guessing and has a 50/50 chance of being right.

Quail, probably not. Bantams maybe, but most people won't. Rabbits yes.

There has been some chatter about introducing sex-linked feather genes to turkeys to separate male and female at a young age. I hope they (whoever they are) don't do it. I just have a general opposition to trans-genetic animals.

Peafowl have their sexual organs too far inside so they can't be vent sexed. I think turkeys can, some places do sell sexed turkeys but most don't. I think all can be feather sexed using DNA. Domestic breeds of ducks (except Muscovies) can be sexed when they start to quack. Hens have a clear quack, drakes are more raspy.

Pilgrim Geese are feather sexed at hatch. I'd like to know about turkeys too. I plan on purchasing some in the spring.
