Hi,

We've had a small flock (4 hens) for about 4 years now. We started with 4 Rhode Island Reds, lost 2 to hawks over the first couple of years, and replaced those two with 2 new ones last year (a white leghorn and a buff orpington). The buff was picked on relentlessly by one of our older hens, and was injured pretty dramatically. Never would go roost with the others, and ended up being grabbed by a predator. By this year we were just left with the white leghorn, so just got 3 new pullets (about 14 weeks)-- a Rhode Island Red (huge!), another buff, and a speckled sussex (I think). We have a small coop and run (total of about 15 x 3 ft long and deep, about 3-4 feet tall), and let the birds free range when we can.

This is a useful link of “How to” BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3. I’d suggest including your location using the guide in the link above. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes
