Hello all,

My family will be relocating to the Cleveland area from Missouri. I am trying to find out what suburbs of Cleveland allow backyard chickens. Most of the threads here and online are a few years old and hopefully laws have changed for some! Thanks for any help!

Well from research I have done, Cleveland itself allows chickens, seven hills as well. I live in solon (about 25 minutes from cleveland) and they allow chickens as long as they are clean, don't smell and of course no roosters. From my understanding and what I have heard from my coworkers that own chickens and roosters, the farther out you are the better off you'll be if you want a rooster, i.e. Medina. Depending on where you are looking to move to, I can try and help you out. I can do some digging and ask around for ya! :)

I'm in Painesville Township, about 30 minutes Easter of downtown Cleveland. Ironically, Painesville City allows chickens, as does Fairport Harbor village, but my township requires a zoning permit application (if your lot was "platted under" one of four Ohio laws. I'm just beginning to find out what happens if your lot (like mine) was platted before any of those laws existed.) So, my girlfriend can just "have chickens" (no fuss) at her house in Fairport, but I have to consult a lawyer first.

Not unheard of from what I've researched and read on here. I know in solon, depending where you live and where your zoning location of your house is what determines it. Maybe possibly your section was grandfathered in after the fact. If anything, inquire with the city's zoning office. I lived out in Concord for a few years and the people down the road had chickens and pekin ducks that would make there way down the street.

Thanks! I have been looking in Solon? Do you like the schools and community?

The schools in Solon are the best in the state, ranked #1 in Ohio and in the nation for 2018. I personally don't have children, so I can't specifically say, but I've noticed a lot of people move to solon so their kids can go to school here and leave once they graduate. As for the community, everyone here is super nice. The city does a lot of activities for the residents, especially during the summer. This is definitely one of the best cities I have lived in so far.

I can concur, Solon is one of the premier neighborhoods around Cleveland. I can't vouch for the schools, because I never had a kid in them and never looked it up, but overall, Solon is a fairly prestigious place to live. It's also fairly rural, spacious homes on large lots, developed after that post-war housing wave which defines much of "suburbia". You might also look at Chardon.. people around here are saying it is "the next Solon/Hudson/Chesterland", growing faster than anywhere else around here....

Solon I feel there a lot of blue collar workers because of all the manufacturing, i.e. Swagelok. Chardon is nice and far enough away from the city, but a distance to drive if you want to do anything. That's what it felt like when I lived out there, but it is still nice. Love the metroparks out there.

Thanks! We are looking in Solon, Chagrin Falls and Hudson, they all allow chickens. Not sure about Pepper Pike, they were voting on it but I can't find the results.

From what I can tell Pepper Pike does allow chickens. No roosters, obviously. Surrounding cities allow only egg layers and no meat birds? Idk. That is weird though nothing is said specifically.
