Successful vent prolapse treatment - with photos

Pics
The post you are quoting is from 2016. The OP (Original Poster) has not been on since 2021.

Do you have photos of your hen, her vent, her poop?
What do you feed, including treats?
She's picking at her vent and it has dried poop - check her for lice/mites. Remove the dried poop, see if she stops picking. She may be trying to remove the poop or she has some bugs, hard to know.

IF you find lice/mites, use a Permethrin based poultry dust to treat her. DE is not going to help much at all.

She's lethargic and off food.
When was the last time she laid an egg?
Is her crop emptying?

Work on hydration, get fluids into her. Sugar water or electrolytes. If she's not laid an egg and should have get Extra Calcium into her.
1Calcium Citrate+D3 tablet once daily for 5 days or you can give TUMS.
They have a 20% Layer feed and also some chicken scratch and they have lots of opportunity to free range in the yard and prefer that. It’s been a long time since she laid an egg. I thought she was looking kinda droopy now for a while. I did see what appeared to be mites when I examined her bottom. And I will try the Premethrrin for Lice and mites and see if that helps. I thought the DE was supposed to be good for that. And I’ll also get some electrolytes & fluids into her. Thanks for the suggestions.

Its July 2025 and im dealing with a prolapsed vent in my chicken. I am determined to help her and dont care if she doesn't lay again i just want her to have a good free range comfortable life. Finding this BLOG has been a life saver and my chicken is now resting with her vent being held in with a bandage successfully after 2days of unsuccessful attempts. I used the home made glucose water and honey to assist me which worked well. But the sticky bandage was the saving grace that will hopefully keep my girl "Whero" in good stead. Its been several hours since she was bathed, blow-waved and bandaged and so far the vent has not been able to exit so fingers and chicken legs crossed this works:)
Thank you authors for this very helpful advice.
