My name is Tiffany and I'm fairly new to the chicken farming. I've been a single mom (mostly) for about 10 years and finally obtained my RN license about 2 years ago. I moved my 2 boys (10 and 7) closer to the "big city" of Little Rock, Ar and started working at the Children's Hospital. We bought 5 acres and decided to start raising some chickens as a hobby. We are a homeschooling family, and I thought it would give the boys something to do in their spare time. We didn't know (and still don't know) a lot about chickens as this is our first experience with them. I bought a few Leghorns and a few Road Island Reds from the local feed store, then a friend of mine gave me a few roosters that she couldn't have within city limits, so I also have a New Jersey Giant and a Silver-Laced fellow. I guess we have 3 roosters (2 roosters have their own house with their own hens and the red rooster is a yard bird that gets him a piece when he can sneak it in), and about 10-12 hens. We're hatching our own eggs for the first time, so wish us luck on that! And I'm wanting to buy more hens. I'd be okay with getting a mix of hens and roosters, but I'm wanting about 40 more chickens and then I plan on slaughtering once they're old enough to eat. I'd really like an ornamental or two just to keep for pets (maybe a Phoenix or a Showgirl or Silkie?). I discovered this site while researching different breeds and temperaments and look forward to being on here often!!
