My chickens piled out of the coop all looking healthy and fine.

Big Gold Brahma rooster immediately sorts out one of the girls and starts to mate with her and.....DROPS DEAD.

Seemingly perfectly healthy before, eating, drinking and crowing fine yesterday.

Anyone got any suggestions as to why he died ?

I am gutted....he was a lovely bird.

(Also posted under "Chicken Behaviours as i am desperate for input)

Thank you,

I double posted this thread as I was so concerned and others have suggested heart failure/attack, too.

As it happens a Gold Brahma hen went broody last evening and is sitting on his eggs as we speak (Almost as though she knew)

Heart attack or stroke. So sorry for your loss. He died doing what roosters LOOOOOVE to do......what a way to go!

Hugs to you!

Yes, he certainly went the way he would have chosen. Treading the girls was his mission in life, and he fulfilled his ambition daily.

So sorry to lose him as he was the biggest and strongest of my boys and I just liked him, but his progeny are being incubated as we speak,

Thank you,

sandie

Hi Sandie -

My big beautiful Gizmo (Partridge Brahma) died suddenly about 3 weeks ago. He was on his favorite roosting spot without a mark on him and hadn't been sick, so I'm feeling your pain.

I have heard a few folk now saying that these big birds are prone to heart attacks....very sad, though.

Thank you all for your kind words, and I really do know how everyone else feels on losing their chickens,

sandie
