Yesterday while i let my flock free range, all seemed fine except one thing.. i was watching my broody and her five little chicks that she hatched 3 days ago... one hen approched to see the little ones... i put my hand forward to pet the hen and she let me do it... what was strange was that this hen never ever let me touch her... i said that perhaps she trust me now and let me pet her... then at night i put my hens in their coop.. i have 2 roos so that means 2 coop as they fight a lot.. i have one fine rooster which is a mix of cochin and another breed... his a really good rooster who let me pet him, take him in my arms.. i think he is 3 years old.. then the other is a red junglefowl about 11 months old so he is very young... whenever i coop 3 of my hens with him, he will mate them quite violently as they cannot escape from the coop... this morning when i woke up to feed them, to my surprise lied my hen who let me pet her yesterday.. the one who would always run away... the one that i mentioned above... i was shocked as she seemed to be perfectly fine except for the change in her attitude... i opened the coop and saw some feathers on the floor.. not too much... but what was most surprising was that the young roo entered the coop went over her... at first i thought that he was trying to wake her up.. but no he mounted her and mate her... do you think its the rooster who has killed her by overmating her... if he had done so i would have heard the hen screaming... what could be the reason for this sudden death... any help advice suggestion would be appreciated...
