Hello,

I just sent away my second chicken to UCDavis for a necropsy. One died a week ago and one more last night. They only look sick for a couple of hours and then they die.
I have about 35 chickens. They are all very well taken care of and healthy.

I cannot figure out what is wrong. The first one that died a week ago I had a chance to talk to the Dr. that is doing the necropsy and so far all the organs look fine. She said they will now do further testing to check the liver, I guess for toxins. Unfortunately the Dr. had a heavy accent and I could barely understand her but she said everything looked normal on the chicken so far. I just sent in the other hen this morning.

Let me add I started losing chickens a couple months back. I have lost a total of four. The first one was a polish roo that I noticed was a little puffed up and by the time I got home from work he was dead in the coop. The second one was a RIR that was about 2. No warning on that one. She was fine in the morning and when I got home from work she was dead under the roost. Then we have the two that just died a week apart.

Right before I lost the first roo my neighbor had been making comments on his crowing. Then one day she called me and said: "if you dont get rid of the rooster you will be sorry"
I said are you threatening me? She said no, not bodily but you will be sorry. I should of called the police but she is an old lady and I thought her bark was worse than her bite so to speak. I actually thought I would get a call from the county or something, saying she complained but no, nothing. I dont know how I could ever catch her doing anything. We have a 100 foot chain link fence separating our property and she could throw something over at any time that was poison for the chickens.

On the last two deaths the only thing I did that may of caused them a problem was put a couple of fertilizer spikes into the ground for my trees. That wasnt the smartest idea and I will not do that again but that was after the first two died anyway. So that wasnt it for them. Another thing I worried about was the fermented food. Can that go wrong and cause them a problem?I have been doing it for over a year now. They also have dry food.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks
Marie

I would make sure that you get a report of the necropsies in writing. Sorry for your losses. Coccidiosis can be a problem in chickens that can cause deaths over a period of time. Poisons or toxins such as botulism from rotting animal/fish/plant remains, lead shot or lead paint chips, molded feed, and chemicals used for pesticides or fertilizers can cause death. If you don't trust your neighbor, you may want to discuss the matter, and contact the police or use a hidden camera. Roosters can be irritating to some people, but I would be afraid to have chickens if I thought that someone was poisoning them. Let us know what you find out from the necropsies.

Look for mothballs by your fenceline, and maybe get a camera or one of those fake blinking cameras pointed at the fenceline.
You also might look into a no crow collar, maybe.
