To clarify, I’m asking on behalf of someone else and not my own experiences.

2-3 year old rooster suddenly dead without any prior warning, having been fine hours earlier—crowing, no injuries, no lethargy, etc.

Found stiff with maggots already in the mouth.

Any ideas about what could have caused this?

What do you feed them?

If there were maggot, he was dead atleast two days before found unless he had fly strike on some unknown wounds, which can kill.
If he was fine hours earlier I agree...he probably had a wound and the maggots killed him.

I’d have to ask!
Okay.
I'm leaning towards diet rather then flystrike. Flies can swarm a dead body pretty quickly, & lay eggs on it. Also it doesn't take long for the maggots to hatch, & start devouring it.
