Rhode Island Red, 3 - 5 years (we inherited this chicken)

She is leaning against walls and moving very slow. Her comb seems a bit more pale than usual.

This is very sudden as she was acting normal when she left the coop this morning.

No other birds in our small flock are exhibiting this behavior.

Since this started, she has eaten some chopped cucumber and a small amount of scratch grains.

She had a white, liquid poop.

Yesterday she laid a rather spherical egg.

The closest poultry vet is an hour away so we would like to treat her on our own.

Our coop is pretty standard and large enough for more birds than we have. We use pine shavings for bedding. Our chickens don't roost, they tend to sleep in the nesting boxes. They are free ranging birds and go all over our property. We have difficulty catching our girls as they were not handled prior to our inheritance of them. Advice for limiting stress for her when examining and treating is welcomed.

I'd start with giving her extra calcium in case she's having a hard time passing an egg.

You can find Calcium Citrate with D3 in the vitamin aisle of stores like Walmart, CVS, etc. Give 1 tablet daily, just pull down on her wattles, pop the tablet into the beak and let her swallow.

My guess would be some type of heat related illness, but I don’t have any technical knowledge of poultry. Only personal experience. For instance today, one of my hens almost 1y/o would not eat the watermelon or broccoli leaves she normally loves- would put in her mouth and drop it out. She was not lethargic, but def not acting the way she normally does. Beak wide open, panting, seemed to be spitting up/regurgitating/possibly vomiting. I placed her feet in one of the shallow water pans w ice water to try to cool her down and she just stood there for nearly 10min w/o moving. At that point, I picked her up and brought her in the house to properly cool her off. After 30min, she was back to normal- eating and drinking, moving around like she usually does, and curious about her new surroundings. When I placed her back with the flock she did just fine. Jeez, I hope that’s all it takes for you to help your girl.
