So, We had planned on building a cooper with recycled materials.
Then my perfectionist carpenter man said we simply could not rehab some of the old wood I had planned on using because he's a perfectionist and it would end up not being perfect.
Little does he know it won't be perfect anyhow. The only thing that will make it looking uniformed will be the coat of paint I will slap on to help it blend in to the woods for the understanding neighbor's sake.
We also are experiencing some major car trouble that I know will rob my cooper fund.
So my question is this, when we are talking about square footage for these birds, are we talking about surface (floor) space or cubic square feet?
My neighbors were going to toss this out:

I don't know why it's sideways. I rotated it on my computer. lol This
was a hutch for a guinea pig that was elevated off the ground because of a dog.
It's super sturdy and does not wiggle at all when I try.
(don't mind the mess in the run. lol it sits unused waiting for the bokboks)
we are still waiting for winter's glacier to retreat. Here's my silly dogs for a size comparison.
The lab is 87#.

Here is the hutch/makeshift brooder that used to also be a guinea pig cage.
Now it's for the birds. We plan on framing the above contraption to be the main house of the coop.
(one level or two? We have not decided..) We are also going to attach the hutch to the back of it and it will become the nest box area.)

I apologize, I don't remember who's coop this is, I found it here.
This is about what we are going for to give a frame of mind.
Except the nest box will be on the back instead of the side.
Please credit yourself with this coop design if it's yours.

But the square footage thing has me at an impasse right now.
If we are talking about surface square feet, I have to rethink this whole thing. again.
As according to my calculations our surface space allows for only 3 surface feet per bird inside the coop.
But if we are talking about cubic square feet, I'm golden!
They will have daily access to a 65 "ground surface" foot attached and secure covered run and also a tractor for daytime (weather appropriate) yard gallivanting.
What are your thoughts, awesome BYC community?
