Of course my chicken became ill ON the weekend AFTER a snow storm when the vet is closed.

He's a 2 yo bantam cochin. He's normally semi-aggressive, stays with the hens during the day, but prefers to sleep alone in a pet carrier at night. Yesterday my DH told me he wasn't in attack mode as he normally is when he went to put him up for the night. This am DH came in and told there was something wrong. Buppy was lethargic, drinking alot of water and his comb is puffy and angrily red and hot. I brought him in the house and right now he's just standing there. He ate a little bit of english muffin and some scrambled egg. There's obviously something wrong but i have no idea what it could be. He did feel like he's lost a little weight too. When I ran my hands over him to feel his crop (which is small and squishy) he follows my hands with his beak as if grooming and preening.

I put some tertracycline in his water and gave him a dose of a Itraconazole that we had when we had another sick roo (who passed last year from a fungal infection). Any one of you seasoned chicken owners know what this could be? Do his symptoms present in a way that may be familiar to you? He's our favorite roo and it kills me to think he's sick and I can't get him any help because of this blasted snow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

ETA: He free ranges in our yard constantly supervised. He's had no unusual treats. His sleep box has pine shavings in it. His poop is kind of watery. Not sure of weight..maybe 5 pounds? No trauma noted. Has only crowed about 4 times so far today which is VERY unusual.

Goodluck!
Make sure to do the routine things, smell breath (for impacted crop) look for mites, around skin vents ext. Look for mold in the coops, look around the yard for maybe a chemical he got into... That sort of stuff

We've done all that stuff..checked everything out..smelled him, checked his skin, etc., I just don't know what the heck is wrong with him.

We're thinking of taking him to the Emergency Vet for euthanasia. If we take him up there for care they'll call in the specialist who charges $180 on top of the $86 emergency fee. shock I know we won't walk out of there under $400. It would only cost $150 to let him go peacefully. We're not sure what to do...I don't want him to suffer. IF he can hang on til Monday, then we can get him to a chicken vet. But is it worth letting him go 48+hours feeling horrible? I dunno.

We gave him some terramycin, some pedialyte, he now shows no interest in eating or drinking.

He's not doing any better but he's not doing much worse. Sigh. I HATE this part of having pets.

No Dont wast $400 !!! There are alot of threads on how to euthenize your birds here. And it costs 0....its really a learning process but it will save you $400.
Maybe if you want to spend money start it on tylan 50 injections... That might help.
Mark

Edited to add tylan could save its life...its worth a shot :)
i really wish someone else would add there 2 cents in

Mark..thank you..seriously. I've noticed that it's sometimes difficult to get answers on here, so thank you very much for your help. I don't think we can euthanize him ourselves..he's a very much loved pet chicken and taking him by our own hands would cause some serious mental damage.

I don't mind spending the $150 to have it done humanely and quietly. Right now he's in his carrier. He's got some Pedialyte and terramycin in his system so hopefully that will make some difference before morning. If not, then we're taking him to the vet to let him go.

If I was to bring him for treatment, I know we wouldn't walk out under $400 or more. We have one avian specialist around here and she charges out the wazoo for emergencies, plus she has the personality of wet mop, which makes it even more annoying to hand over a chunk of cash to her, but i digress. Hopefully Buppy will be a little better by morning and can make it to Monday to see our regular vet. WHy do they always get sick on the weekend?

Oh yea, his poop has alot of urates and a little bit of green poop. I know that's not good. Also the swelling/puffiness hasn't gone down in his comb. cry

Again, thank you for being here!!

ETA: I just saw this msg. and TSC will be closed before I can get up there for the Tylan. I should probably have that on hand.
