Suddenly messy girls

A couple weeks ago I decided to try a higher-protein feed for my girls. I mixed it together with the old stuff and put it out for them. I'm happy with egg production and poop quality but look what happens in the run!
They make this colossal mess, especially when the feeder runs low. Do they hate the new stuff (pellets) or the old stuff (crumbles)?? Or do they just start billing it out more as parts of the tray empty out?
I switched them to a different kind of pellet a few months ago and don't remember this.
Any insights into chicken psychology appreciated

I would guess they have found that there is high protein feed in there, and are searching it out.

....and spilling a pile of it in the process, little doofuses. Maybe I'll try giving them just the new stuff and see if it doesn't happen again. I would hate to throw the rest of the old stuff out but if they're just going to gloop up their sand with the mix I guess there's no point.
