suet block okay for chickens and guineas?

Hi,

is it okay to give my chickens and guineas suet blocks that I put out by the song bird feeders in the winter?

I've often thought about doing this as well, but worry that the fat content would just add fat and not enough protein - any other BYC'ers have any input?

I don't know that I'd give them a lot, but mine will hang out under the suet feeders when it is getting shaken by a larger bird or squirrel, and eat the pieces that fall.
