Suet cakes

Good morning hens & roos! I was wondering if anyone makes suet cakes for their flock with bacon grease? If so, would you mind sharing your recipes? Thanks in advance & have a great day!!

You may be able to substitute bacon grease for the oil in this flock block recipe.

This one you could try too. It uses Tallow which of course is a bit firmer than bacon grease, but in cooler weather you may be able to substitute some anyway.

Like anything, everything in moderation. A little oil/treats like this is fine as a treat, but I would not give them a lot at one time or put it out for a short period of time, then take it up.

Also...bacon grease stores fairly well in a glass jar in the fridge. I save it and use it for cooking here and there. It's also fantastic to use when seasoning your cast iron cookware if you use any of that.

Lastly, there's a lot of DIY treats for chickens if you search for them, some recipes may be better than others, you may have to experiment a little to find what you want, but chickens will eat just about anything!

Thank you very much for the info! I've seen several recipes here & there but was more interested in recipes people could say they have or do personally use. Maybe I'm weird but to me when someone tells you about something they themselves use & trust it just holds more weight. I'd planned on giving suet cakes sparingly, maybe once a month during the colder period. I think I remember seeing somewhere that giving them a few extra calories during cold snaps can be beneficial as long as its done in moderation. We currently give our girls plain steel cut oatmeal on the mornings when its been 30° or colder overnight, luckily that doesn't happen TOO often here! (GA) Again, thanks for the info!

Its not a suet cake, but i make a liver cake with cracked corn, pellet feed, cooked rice, cow liver, and liver pate.

Add the cow liver, liver pate, 2 cups water, cooked rice in a blender and blend. Once it is liquid, add the dry corn and pellet feed until the consistency is solid. Mold into a pan to feed.

Once the chickens figure out they like it, they will eat it. Liver is super healthy and good for replenishing diet.
