I get e-mails from Chicken 101, a yahoo group and this was in one of the e-mails I received today. I have not tried this myself, but thought someone might want to try it. Here is what it said:
Suggestions:
Feed only a layer, a scant sprinkle of red pepper's (dried crushed chili peppers) in the evenings give an assortment of bird seed (types that have little to no corn)
Alfalfa hay if birds do not range
Apple Cider Vinegar Two caps to gallon of water every other day
Plenty of fresh water )

Has anyone tried anything like this? I have been reading that the apple cider vinegar is good for lots of things, even mites.

Many here use organic apple cider vinegar (ACV.) It is a probiotic. It also keeps the slime in the waterer down. You can't put it in a galvanized waterer, though; leaches metals into the water. Have never heard of its being used for mites; wonder whether they mean to drink it or use it topically?

The cayenne thing has been mentioned here as well; don't think it is proven. Many here use black oil sunflower seeds (BOSS) which are usually in bird seed, and BOSS is a good protein supplement. Since chickens need a good diet to lay, a little protein supplement is probably good. Corn is low in protein.
