I have a basic coop and run here in my backyard in LA. I have 10 Cochins (one his half silkie), about 2 and a half months old. The coop is about 5x7, and the run is about 9 x 14, with an extra bit on the end, as well as the area under the coop. I have a video down below giving a short tour of all of this so you can see what I mean.

There's a tarp over the coop to protect it from the sun, occasional rain, and falling fruit (they're next to a tangerine tree). The coop has two wooden walls, both of which have about two inches open at the top for ventilation. It's pressed against a stone wall, which acts as the third wall, and the fourth wall is mainly open to the air. It has a small piece of wood on the end. I considered putting something on the opening to kind of make it more shut up, but I wasn't quite sure. I wanted to be sure that there's good ventilation, especially in these hot summer days. It would need to have hinges for me to open it up, or else it would be really hard to clean/get eggs.

As you can see, during the day they like to hang out under the coop where it's coolest. I keep a second waterer under there and move their food under there in the morning.

Also their run is very hard dirt. I think it has a lot of clay in it, which makes it difficult for me to rake and clear up their poop. Any thoughts about what I could do about that?

I would like to let you know that chicken wire will not stop a determined predator. Try hardware cloth or welded wire. Also you could put a layer of sand in the run to help with raking up poo

I considered the hardware cloth, but where I live in LA there are only cats. And the cats are, comically, kind of afraid of my chickens.

I think you should provide some more insolation on the coop part, but the run looks great! What breeds do you have? I love their feet and curiosity!

Isolation on the coop part? What do you mean?

They're Cochins. 9 full cochines, and one half cochin half silkie
