So this past Tuesday late afternoon, early evening, I figure around 6:30 or so while the flock was free ranging a ground predator made off with 2 of my very nice wheaten marans. Not my best but nonetheless very nice. I figure a couple of coyotes since the only evidence of the snatch and run was a few primary feathers. No blood, no pun feathers, no mess.

Tonight I come home and oh yeah, it's 7:30 and one of the backward white Plymouth rocks is strolling about the run advertising itself as a freebie meal for any owl. Mentally challenged hatchery birds. Really. Stupid suicidal behavior.

Sometimes, they're just plain dumb. A few years ago, my flock was out free ranging and a turkey vulture flew over. Not a threat, but the roosters only saw a big bird, so they sounded the alarm. Poof! Not a chicken to be seen.... except the buff orpington hen, cluelessly hunting and pecking and doing her chicken thing. (We do have hawks and eagles, so I figured one day she'd be someone's lunch.)
