I have read a few postings on BYC and other places that suggest Sulmet for sour crop. Since Sulmet is an antibiotic (sulfa drug) isn't that exactly what you don't want to give them? Doesn't the antibiotic kill the beneficial bacteria and allow the yeast to become overgrown?

I looked up Sulmet on the company's website and it does not mention using it for sour crop. It only lists using it for cocci, coryza, cholera, and Pullorum.

I am trying to decide if my rooster has an impacted crop, sour crop, or something else. He is just mopey, not crowing, and not hanging out with the crowd. He has been like that since at least Saturday. I see him eat a little, and drink. Not sure about poop yet, I have seen runny and normal. He is inside in a dog crate now so I can monitor what he does a little better. I gave him some olive oil and a crop massage so I should know in the morning if it is impacted or sour, or neither. I also but nutridrench and ACV in his water.

I lost a hen in Jan. to what the lab said was presumptive Marek's. Even though he doesn't have any problem walking, other than slow, I am worried that he could have internal tumors that are affecting his GI tract. I am just hoping it is a crop issue that I can resolve. 5 months has been a long incubation time, but I don't know how fast the tumors would grow. But all my adult birds should have been exposed at the same time, IF that is even what she really died from. Chickens can get internal tumors from other things, and my hen never had an paralysis, just a lack of balance and eventually wouldn't eat, but because of the tumors they said Marek's. It is frustrating to really not know for sure even with a necropsy. I have a closed flock and no nearby chickens so I am still trying to figure out where we would have gotten Marek's in the first place.

I have 28 chicks under 6 weeks. I sure hope it isn't Marek's.

Anybody have an opinion on this? Sulmet I have, but Nystatin I don't. But I don't want to make it worse by giving sulmet if that is the wrong drug.

I am putting acv and nutri drench in his water, and he drinks it ok. I also gave him some olive oil last night. This morning his crop feels squishy and I can feel little bits of grain and/or grit in it. He does poop, and it looks pretty normal. I bought the yogurt and will try some of that tonight.

If I remember right you need to make sure the acv is the organic kind with the "mother" in it (don't know what that means, but..) and you want to use yoghurt that has live cultures in it. Good luck with him!

Thanks. I have the acv that is organic so I hope that is the right stuff. I will take him to a vet if I have to. And if I loose him I will have a necropsy done. I need to know if there is a tumor involved anywhere that would indicate Marek's.

This morning he acted alert and hungry, but I didn't feed him. Only water for him until tomorrow morning, or tonight if he is better.

I think I will not use the Sumet as I am pretty sure that an antibiotic is exactlly what I DON'T want right now. I will ask my vet tonight. Luckily she lets me email her

Someone I consulted about a sour crop situation said that Sulmet did have some benefit in the treatment of sour crop. I don't know for sure, at least from my experience. It did surprise me at the time. I just fixed a sour crop issue with one of my older hens, but unfiltered ACV in the water, no food for about 48 hours and then yogurt and scrambled eggs was the course I took.

Interesting about the Sulmet--I always wondered why it would help with cocci, since cocci is a protozoan, not a bacteria, but that is one of the accepted treatments for cocci, the sulfa drug.

The Sulmet worked great for cocci, but that is an interesting point. I will have to ask my vet that as well.

I will follow your course of treatment and

Mister Roo wouldn't eat anything last night and didn't drink much water. This morning I left him in the bathroom. He was slowly walking around. I was gone for about 5 minutes to get his breakfast and when I came back he was dead. RIP

I sent him to the lab for a necropsy to rule out or confirm Marek's. It is going to be a long few weeks waiting for the results.

I'm so sorry! It's so tough to lose them. I always get more attached to the ones I have to doctor and that makes it even worse when they don't make it. Good for you for taking the extra time and effort to have the necropsy done.
