I have read a few postings on BYC and other places that suggest Sulmet for sour crop. Since Sulmet is an antibiotic (sulfa drug) isn't that exactly what you don't want to give them? Doesn't the antibiotic kill the beneficial bacteria and allow the yeast to become overgrown?
I looked up Sulmet on the company's website and it does not mention using it for sour crop. It only lists using it for cocci, coryza, cholera, and Pullorum.
I am trying to decide if my rooster has an impacted crop, sour crop, or something else. He is just mopey, not crowing, and not hanging out with the crowd. He has been like that since at least Saturday. I see him eat a little, and drink. Not sure about poop yet, I have seen runny and normal. He is inside in a dog crate now so I can monitor what he does a little better. I gave him some olive oil and a crop massage so I should know in the morning if it is impacted or sour, or neither. I also but nutridrench and ACV in his water.
I lost a hen in Jan. to what the lab said was presumptive Marek's. Even though he doesn't have any problem walking, other than slow, I am worried that he could have internal tumors that are affecting his GI tract. I am just hoping it is a crop issue that I can resolve. 5 months has been a long incubation time, but I don't know how fast the tumors would grow. But all my adult birds should have been exposed at the same time, IF that is even what she really died from. Chickens can get internal tumors from other things, and my hen never had an paralysis, just a lack of balance and eventually wouldn't eat, but because of the tumors they said Marek's. It is frustrating to really not know for sure even with a necropsy. I have a closed flock and no nearby chickens so I am still trying to figure out where we would have gotten Marek's in the first place.
I have 28 chicks under 6 weeks. I sure hope it isn't Marek's.
