I have a sick 4 month old hen that just started today with bright red bloody stools with bits of yellow in it. We noticed that she's lethargic and doesn't appear to be eating. After researching the internet a bit we suspected Coccidiosis, and separated her from the entire 4 month old flock. We were told that none of the chicks were vaccinated at birth. We went to several feed stores and bought Tetracycline at the first store, then Wazine 17 at another, and and then Sulmet at the third. We got all kinds of conflicting info for treatment, including the possibility of it being Marek's disease. After researching Marek's disease, we don't believe that she has this disease however we are keeping her segregated just to be on the safe side. We intend to start the sick hen and the flock on the Sulmet tomorrow. My question is can a combination of one or more of the above medications be mixed together and put into their drinking water?

Start them all on the Sulmet today as soon as possible. Coccidiosis (if that is the problem, and sounds like it is) can kill in a matter of hours, so mix it up and start it. You might as well put them back together since they have all been exposed. It's in the soil and droppings. Keep the feeders and waterers free of poop, and keep the litter dry.

Capillary worms can also cause blood in stools. Fenbendazole (SafeGuard Liquid goat wormer) 1 ml for 5 days in a row is the treatment for those worms which are very serious. But treat for cocci first, and then later you can see if there is still blood in the poop.

Thank you...we started the flock on the Sulmet but also included the Tetracycline and Wazine too but it was too late for the hen. She died this morning. Was walking around and keeled over and died. The rest of the flock seems OK. I was wondering if she could have eaten a small piece of glass or something shape, and bled out internally?
