Are sunflowers seed (in the shell) safe for hens? As a treat?

Also my neighbor grows seed/feed corn and told me I can go pick as much as i want for my chickens. Could i throw a few dried ears in the coop for winter treats?

I sure would appreciate any input!

Yes they love them ~ try to get the Black Oil Sunflower Seeds if you can.

They will also love the corn. Make sure they have access to grit, either naturally found on the ground or supplied by you.

Thanks Julie!
I have about 15 large (Russian Mammoth) sunflowers growing along side my barn, I usually feed the birds in the winter with them, though they aren't the black oil seeds you suggested, I think I will save 6 or 8 of the "sunflower heads" and offer them as treats over the winter.

So glad about the cobs, what a great (and free)

treat for the gang over the winter.

I am planning on using these treats during the nasty weather when they can't free range.

Thanks so much for your advice!
