Portland area has been cloudy/overcast/drizzly for far too long and I could sleep in. And all of sudden, someone turned on the Sun switch, Temperature has FINALLY starting to hit into the 80's and one day managed to make it to 90 I think. Along with it, bright sunrise at around 5:00AM.

Coop has regular windows to let sunlight in. I thought it was a great idea for long dreary overcast winter we have. Downside I forgot was that, oh that's right my hens wake up when the sun glares into the coop and floods their roost with bright sun. Talk about the noise they make!! )(*&^%%% I want to sleep in till at least 5:30AM. I know I've got lot of chores to do feed hen, feed my cats and dogs... then finally feed me around 8:00AM. But I'm sorry 4:30AM when the sky is getting lighter or when the sun is up around 5:00AM is just plain too early!

I placed a scrap plywood board over their window to keep their coop dark till I'm good and ready. I did this this morning around 5:00AM and went back to sleep. Peace and quiet. Windows in my bedroom are open to let fresh cool morning air in to cool off the house.

So if you want to sleep in, keep the roost dark where your hens are sleeping. darkness works wonder! :)

I had to do the same thing - cover their window I mean. I can't let them out before 7:00 am (noise ordinance) so I have to keep them in "bed" until then. The window cover works well.
