So my male and Female duck have been "flirting" with eachother. Bobbing their heads up and down at eachother in the pool. I am not sure if they have began yet, or if it is leading up to it - I only have the 2, male and female. (indian runner ducks). every morning I let them out in their outdoor run. they go in their pool. I walk out and go get some of my morning things ready. I came back the past 2 days and the female was in the pool - but seems like numb. like in a trans. she let me pet her back and stomach in the water (which is never ever possible, i would have to chase her to ever do this?!) does anyone think they mate while I am gone - and when I come back she is like sore/tired and so she is like just floating there - because then I pick her up and she like snaps out of it and shes all 100% fine again?!!?! they are 12 weeks old... so I am not sure. they are my first ducks

Yep Drakes mature a little later than ducks. If she can't interest him, you will have to do.:gig I had a single duck for a while never let me touch her until she started flattening out for me to pet her back. I was kind of creeped out when I figured out what was going on. Then, what the heck, it was the only time I got to touch her. So this is normal mating behaviour. When your drake gets going she will lose interest in you.

LOL! How funny, but very odd. Oh my goodness, LOL! I hope he doesnt hurt her.

Just watch her for overmating. First sign is usually neck or head feathers pulled out. If you see that you will need to separate them for a while to give her a break. Not all drakes are evil, hope you're is a gentleman. Now I ask the obligatory BYC question. Have you thought about getting more hens? 2 or 3 more would even the odds a bit.

Well, I hope he is too... However, every time I have ever seperated them they go INSANE because they dont want to be seperated. They like always have to see eachother... however, does this go away as they begin mating?! I will keep a close eye.

How many times a day / week do they mate?

I have not considered it. We really dont want any more, but I guess I could consider one more female?

I don't know ducks but if its anything like chickens he will be at it as often as he can. Roosters can service many hens many times a day. If there is only one hen she is going to be the object of his intentions. They don't want to be separated because they are social animals and they only have each other. You really might want 2 more rather than 1. If the 1 isn't accepted well by the 2 you have it will be lonely. Getting 2 gives her a pal. Well, that's how it works with chickens. Duck people can correct me I'm sure.
