I have two nearly 3 month old Gold Sex-link chicks and I noticed yesterday that they both have little surface scratches here and there on their feet. The floor of their coop is wire with scrap wood and cardboard on top with some leaves and dried grass tossed here and there. A friend of mine suggested this kind of floor for easy clean-out with a hose. It also seems to be helping them keep cool but I wonder if they are cutting their feet on the scrap wood or something? Only other thing I can figure is that the leaves I have are from a big magnolia tree in my back yard, and those leaves are very firm and brittle. Maybe the leaves are scratching their feet?

Should I worry about this? I'd hate for them to get infected. What do you think is causing the scratches?
