I am new to this forum and have a question/concern. I have a flock of 5 backyard hens and one rooster ( who was suppose to be a chick) and they are all 5 years old and have been raised together since birth. This morning, I discovered a baby chick with my Easter Egger outside of the nest, but within the confines of the coop. She seems to be very happy and the chick is very active around her running around and keeping cover under mama. The others were curious, but happily went outside in the yard where they are now. I gave Mama some water and feed and she happily stood and ate, and I saw another unhatched egg under her. I thought she was brooding for the past 2 weeks.
So what now, do I separate the chick from her or let her raise her. Will the others leave her alone? If she hasn't done anything to the baby by now is there still a chance she could?

Absolutely do not take her chick!
The flock has already demonstrated they know about the chick and know the EE has been setting. Let them all be.
The whole flock needs to be put on chick starter. You can put oyster shell on the side for the active layers. You may already be feeding this way or with another all flock type of feed because you have a rooster and they should not be eating layer feed.

ETA: Welcome to BYC!

No, just leave the chick with the mother. :) She'll take real good care of that baby.

When you have a broody hen, I've observed that the other birds leave the hens alone for the most part.

For me, the only time the hens have actually harmed the chicks, was when they knew the chicks wouldn't make it. Other then that, they do just fine.

I have a broody hen right now with 6 babies, and they're getting along beautifully with my older birds. :D
