After running a couple errands yesterday, I swept thru the backyard for a quick “chick check” – my Bantams love to taunt me by flying over their 6 foot fence. No Itty Bitties out, and in the heat, toasty 100 degrees, my big girls do not venture out from their shade unless treat tempted. Into the house I go and release the young dogs (young mastiff and young border collie – both almost 2), close door to preserve the cool ac air, let the old-sters out of their kennels (old mastiff -9 and old blue heeler -13). Waiting for the blue heeler to work himself into moving I hear a horrible chicken screaming outside.

Heart pounding, I dash outside, yelling for the dogs – mind racing – how could this happen – my youngsters love the chickens and spend hours with them – even unsupervised. There standing 75 feet from the porch are the youngsters – between them and my pasture fence a STRANGE little chicken – on the other side of the pasture fence ANOTHER strange little chicken. The chicken closest to the dogs is screaming like it is being eaten alive, frantically running up and down the fence line, bobbing and weaving. The second chicken is also frantically mirroring the first but (thankfully) minus the ear piercing screaming.

I am not sure who was more bewildered – me or my poor dogs! They were about 50 feet away from the strange chickens and were not even thinking about touching them.

So, now rounded up and in quarantine, I have two strange roos (believe they both are, one crows for sure and other seems to be showing saddle feathers) – though who knows how much contact they may have had thru the fences with my flock. They seem very, very thin (even compared to my 12 week old bantams), don’t seem to recognize “crumbles”, or fruits/veggies but are excited to see…….bird seed and bread.

So here they are – any clue what they might be? Anyone interested? – I have checked with my neighbors – no chickens. The black/white is very skittish, crower, screamer, but also tidbit clucker. Red is quiet, not as skittish but not yet at ease – sound the alarm quickly when he sees me.

both of them are mixed breeds for sure, the brown one is mixed between EE and some cochins, and i think the withe and black is mixed between silver laced wynedott and some cochins too, but hey I am not an expert by any means.

I love the mohawk! I take it you can't keep either of them? It's a good thing your dogs like chickens, those poor boys could've really gotten into some trouble!

I was thinking cochin cross on the black/white one... Mr. T, I don't know about

Ever been to Kauai? The island is swarming with wild chickens that got loose during hurricane Iniki. Some look nice, but most are skinny, sad, beggars who know tourists=handouts. Your new birds don't look so bad in comparison. Sounds like fate they found you. I guess they couln't find a beach full of tourists.
