What's 10% of $9.00? 90c, right? Okay, so what's half of that? Because 5% is half of 10%, right? Half of 90c is 45c. Add 45c to $9.00 and that's your new wage per hour. $9.45. See, I told you it was easy!

This made no sense to me at all until I studied it for a bit.

I solved it like this:
What is 5% of 9.00?
X = 5% x 9
X = .05 x 9
X = .45
$9 + .45 = $9.45

My mental math was

5% is 5/100.
so 5% of 900 is 5/100 x9
9x5=45.
plus the original 900. (900+45)
9.45

That makes a lot of sense, actually. I'm no good at mental math but I think you have just solved that problem...at least for percentages!
It works fairly well for round numbers. But decimals can get tricky. Paper math and formulas are a safer bet unless you're just rounding and don't need to be precise.

My process
to divide anything by 10 you just move the decimal place to the left once so
10% of 9 is .9
To get to 5% just divide by 2
.9 / 2 = .45
And then I just added the old pay plus the raise hence 9.45

My mental process was just looking at it. I guess you need to have learned how to do percentages, and know your multiplication tables, and if you did and do, then, just by looking at it you would know the answer.

If you can't do it, then, don't fret, you would still be a valuable employee. They can tell you that they gave you a 5% raise every year, but actually give you anything less and you would never know the difference. I guess that is one form of job security.

I am not good at explaining things so bare with me. But, in school they beat into your brain the multiplication tables. This is an example of why. If you automatically know that 9x5=45 then you can look at that and know that 5% of $9 is 45 cents. And, you know that 45 cents added to $9 is $9.45. But, you also need to know how to find percentages. There are different ways to find percentages but one of the simple ways is with multiplication. So, to find 5% of 9 you just multiply. Turn you percentage into a decimal by moving the decimal point 2 places to the left. If you move the decimal of 5% two places to the left you have .05. Then multiply .05 x 9= .45. That is a simple one so if you know your multiplication tables you know the answer as soon as you see it. Now, if it was finding a more difficult one such as 5.5% of $9.26 it is not as easy to just see it and know what it is. But, it is still the same method to find your answer. 9.26 x .055= 50.93 cents. They would round that up to 51 cents. Add that to your current rate of $9.26 and you would now be making $9.77 a hour
