Sustainable food source for winter months

Is there anything I can plant to help feed my flock through the winter (besides the ordinary veggies we eat)? My birds are free range, so they can forrage. I plan on letting the grass grow long so they can find seed, and to promote bug growth, but I'd still like to plant something that will sustain them a little better (they eat alot of feed when there isn't much to forrage). Thanks!

Mangel beets would be good fodder and I plan to plant those and pumpkins too.
