Svart Hona.

I know this is from a few months ago but I've got a pair of these. They're almost 9 months old now. My pullet is going broody for her first time. Whenever she started laying, she laid a beautiful pearl looking egg like a machine every single day. She's very sweet and affectionate and has the sweetest looking face with huge dark eyes. My cockerel has been wonderful so far even taking charge and protecting me anytime my jerk rooster tries to get close to me. I may be in for a rude awakening but he is really different from any of my other cockerels and roosters. His hatchmate a Silverudd's Blue cockerel is also quite protective around the mean boys but the SH is just different. Both of the SH's seem to want to please and are loyal, if that even makes sense for a chicken. None of my other birds are like these two and they aren't kept together so that makes me think it's possibly the way they are. I find it incredibly interesting. I don't have any AC and only ended up with the SH hatching eggs because of another breed I wanted but didn't get. What a coincidence right? I got some of the breed I wasn't really interested in and considered not incubating them, but now I can't get enough and they really surprise me every day.

This is Zeon.

I need a more current picture of Zelda, but this is her from a couple of months ago. She's only getting more beautiful by the day.

Wow!!!! Are they expensive? I just don’t understand what the difference is between this breed and the Ayam Cemani.

I keep seeing posts about Svarthona being bigger than Ayam Cemani, but everywhere I look that doesn't seem to be the case. Including with Greenfire Farms (though they don't give a weight for the Cemani:

What is certain is that Swedish Black Hens are relatively small and sleek –the roosters weigh about 4 lbs.—and have a friendly, relaxed temperament.

I'm in line for Svarthona hatching eggs from Black Feather Farm:
  • cocks- 7 lbs.
  • hens- 5 lbs.

AC were brought to Sweden and adapted to it, these chickens became the SH. People say they are more cold hardy than their AC cousins, but I'm not really sure what that means; as I don't see what makes them more cold hardy other than just being raised somewhere colder as they're both susceptible to frost bite.

My rooster is 4lbs 3ozs and my hen is 3lbs 4ozs (made it easy for remembering, huh 😁). They are more petite than my other large fowl breeds. They'll be 2 in September. Wonderful birds no doubt.
