Hi, I swapped out a smaller male who had been in a rabbit hutch with 7 other quail with a larger young one that had reached full size and was crowing. I noticed the large female in the cage was chittering at it and chasing it around some but after switching some bedding everything seemed to calm down. This morning I find it in the dustbath with no eyes!

Is there a specific way I should introduce them? The cage I was introducing him into was the breeder cage, the brooder he came from is near by so they can hear each other. I've introduced a couple of birds into the cage before with no issues I could tell. I did have one female taken out to heal from bareneck and she died after I put her back in but she didn't look as abused as this poor guy did.

I've had same issue. They are territorial at times

for me, I introduce females to the male's cage one at a time until the quad is set. he is able to sweet talk (shanghai) her by himself and then I add another hen next day, then another.

Oh man I moved the big female into the new cage with her new friends today (moving them 1 by one into a new cage with the new guys) and she bloodied 2 of them before I moved her back. What a trouble maker. She lays the biggest eggs though so she gets a pass.
